1. Through watching this film, Argo, a person learns about the Iranian Hostage Crisis as a whole and how the American people and Iranian people dealt with this situation. At the beginning of the movie, Ben Affleck shows the viewers how the hostage crisis started and why it started which is good for a lot of people to see. Before I watched the movie, I had some sense of what the Iranian Hostage Crisis was but I didn't know why or how it started. This movie was good to help me see how it started and the motives behind the Iranians for them to do this because it explained that the Iranians hated the new president that the United States put in power in Iran so they lashed out.
While watching Argo, you get to see how the American people and Iranian people reacted to this crisis. The movie uses real footage of the crisis and news footage in the US and it really shows you the whole story of the crisis. It also shows you how the American people reacted and most of the time, it wasn't in a good way. In the movie, it shows scenes of American people lashing out against Iranian people that live in the US just because they were mad at the people of Iran as a whole.
Through this crisis, patriotism came up a lot in the US and lots of people told the media that they would be willing to pick up a gun and fight for this country. An anger arose in both sides of the crisis. The American people were outraged that the Iranians took Americans hostage and the Iranians were outraged that we put a terrible person in power in Iran. This movie helped you see both sides of the story and why they were mad which was good to see so you could understand both sides. You also get to see how the CIA works and how this extravagant operation happened and how it was successful.
2. Through watching this film, people will learn a lot about the Iranian Hostage Crisis and the operation as well but they won't get all of the facts. Some of the scenes are skewed a little bit but that is just to create an interesting storyline to engage the viewer. For example, at the end of the movie, the Iranian officers realize that the "Canadian film crew" was in fact the six Americans that escaped. They immediately get in their police cars and jeeps and drive after the plane to try to stop it but the plane takes off and the Americans get away. This didn't actually happen. The six Americans got away and the plane took off with no trouble and the escape wasn't know until months later. That wouldn't really be an interesting scene in the movie and wouldn't keep you on the edge of your seat so I see why Ben Affleck chose to create that scene.
You also see in the movie the help from the Canadians. In the movie, you see the Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor, and his wife, Pat Taylor, help the Americans but in the movie, you don't see them do much. You see that they did keep them safe and did let them live with them but you don't see much else. In the actual situation, Ken Taylor was trying very hard to help them get out and talked with the US to try and get the Americans home safely. Other than those two details, the movie is very accurate and is surprising because the operation was so extravagant and nobody thought it would work, not even the six Americans Tony was trying to save. The US government doubted the mission and almost cancelled it and sent in the military but Tony didn't take no for an answer and took them out anyway.
3. If the director, Ben Affleck, had twenty more minutes to put into this movie, I think he should put in the help of the Canadians a bit more. Tony Mendez, the man who successfully completed the operation, wasn't the only man trying to get the Americans home. He did play a major role in the success but there were more people trying to help too. I think Ben Affleck should have put a couple more scenes of the six Americans interacting with the Canadians and how they felt. Ben Affleck should have put more scenes of how the Americans were feeling and how they were dealing with the fact that they might not be saved from Iran and that they might be killed trying to get out. I think those scenes would be very interesting to the viewer and would make the end feel better since the viewer has seen the characters in a new light and sort of bonded with them. It would create a better connection with the viewers and the characters of the movie. It would also show you the seriousness of the Iranian Hostage Crisis and that the operation had to work or everyone would be killed.
I think it would make the movie better if Ben Affleck would put a couple more scenes about how the Canadians helped the Americans because it shows that this mission wasn't just a one man job. Of course it was very interesting and very accurate but there were more people helping out to save these Americans. I think that if Ben Affleck had included these scenes, the greater world would see how different countries help each other out and would make them feel better about the world. Once the Americans came home, the US gave the credit to Canada which showed everybody how two different countries can work together and it brought harmony to a lot of international relationships. I think this movie could do the same thing but for people to see that the world isn't terrible and at the end of the day, we are not all that different and we should help each other out. The movie also shows scenes of Sahar, the Iranian housekeeper for the Taylors, helping out the Americans by keeping their identities hidden when Iranian officers come knocking at the door of the Canadian Embassy. This shows the viewer that we can all help each other out for the good of humanity and that we should put aside our differences and help each other when people are in need.
