In this article, I learned that empathy is something everyone is born with. You don't have to be empathic but there is still a little part of you that has empathy. The rats in this experiment would almost always save the trapped rat but not all of the male rats would. All of the female rats would which leads scientists to believe that the experiment triggered their natural maternal instinct. All but 7 of 26 male rats saved the trapped rat but some scientists believe that it wasn't because they weren't empathic but they chose to destress themselves. Peggy Mason stated, "I don’t think it’s because they didn’t have empathy. I don’t think they had the ability to down-regulate their own stress and act on the empathy." I also learned that when the free rat was offered food, it would still save the trapped rat and share the food with the recently trapped rat. This experiment is really something we should all look at because we're all born with empathy it's just if we choose to be empathic or not.
