Slave Narratives

Master-Slave Relationships

With Master and slave relationships there were dehumanizing effects on both sides. With the slave, they realized that they were slaves and saw each other as property because they could be used for any task and could be sold at any time and for whatever reason. The slave could not resist the master of any task he wanted them to do even if it was immoral or a sexual task. With the slaveholder, they would have so much power that they would be dehumanized as well as the slaves. Austin Steward stated in his narrative, “Such unlimited power transforms the man into a tyrant, the brother into a demon.” This shows that even though the masters were not slaves and were free, they were dehumanizing themselves in the way they treated other people. In what ways were slaves and masters similar? What did the other people in the slaveholder's family think about the way they treated the slaves?
